HISTORY

Between 2021 and 2023, local citizen scientists collected and summarized current and past data on water levels, water quality, weather parameters, and fish populations for the major lakes of the Beaver Hills Biosphere. Volunteers also worked with the Alberta Lakes Management Society to collect water samples and to monitor and report water level gauge data for Alberta Environment.

Results of this worked showed drastic declines in water levels of most of the major lakes from the peak water levels of the early 1900’s.

Presentations of this information, to concerned community members, resulted in the formation of the Beaver Hills Watershed Stewardship Society (BHWSS) in July 2023. The BHWSS is a registered non-profit society.

The society is currently seeking to increase public awareness, engage community members as volunteers, address knowledge gaps and create partnerships to develop joint projects aimed at finding and implementing solutions.
